[trailer] Emma Stone And Jonah Hill’s Upcoming Series Is, Um, Not Like ‘Superbad’

Man, a lot of stuff can change in 11 years.

Just look at Emma Stone and Jonah Hill. Nowadays, they’re serious muck-a-muck actors who get nominated for Academy awards and win ’em some of the time. But back in 2007, they were both billed as second bananas to Michael Cera in the Judd Apatow-directed teen comedy Superbad, although I bet some of us could tell they were destined for bigger and better. Stone injected a hotshot of personality and charisma into what would’ve been a forgettable “girl in the movie” role in the hands of a different actor. And Hill burned his way into our hearts permanently with his delivery of the iconic line,  “The funny thing about my back is it’s located on my cock.”

These days, the funny thing about Hill’s back is it takes up 60 percent less space than it used to by the looks of him in this teaser for Maniac. With director Cary Fukunaga of True Detective fame behind the metaphorical wheel, Netflix’s Maniac appears a far cry from Apatow’s silly sentimental bullshit. Netflix explains….

Set in a world somewhat like our world, in a time quite similar to our time, Maniac tells the stories of Annie Landsberg (Emma Stone) and Owen Milgrim (Jonah Hill), two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial…that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently. Things do not go as planned.

The teaser gives us a good idea of what tone we can expect from Maniac, if not necessarily a ton of plot details or anything of that nature. It’s also a testament to aspects of visual mediums that we don’t think about as much as, perhaps, we should. Two actors sitting at a table looking at each other doesn’t sound like a very exciting scene by itself. But as we can see — with the right combination of color, lighting, editing, and music, two actors sitting at a table gets pretty intense.

Maniac lands on devices officially on September 21. Until then, let us reminisce on simpler times, when we needed fake I.D.s to buy booze and our cocks were on our backs.
